Sun City, October 9, 2024: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, a global leader in the automotive industry, celebrates twenty years of innovation and growth in South Africa.
To mark this milestone, Mahindra organized a celebratory drive from Gauteng, where the company’s headquarters is located, to Sun City in the Northwest Province. The drive and evening event showcased Mahindra’s legacy and ambitious future plans.
The Mahindra Journey in South Africa
Mahindra first entered the South African market in 2004, launching the Mahindra Bolero. This marked the beginning of Mahindra’s growth in the local automotive industry. Over the next two decades, the brand steadily introduced new models and expanded its presence, continuously investing in its infrastructure, dealer network, and training facilities.
In 2005, Mahindra debuted the Mahindra Scorpio, symbolizing strength and reliability. The Pik Up followed in 2007, and these rugged models laid the foundation for Mahindra’s expansion. The XUV500 was introduced in 2011, solidifying Mahindra’s commitment to innovation.
Building Local Production
In 2018, Mahindra inaugurated its first South African assembly facility at Dube Trade Port in Durban. This significant step reinforced Mahindra’s commitment to local production and growing its presence in the region. The opening of this facility marked the start of a new era, with Mahindra solidifying South Africa as its second home outside of India.
In 2024, Mahindra proudly rolled out its 20,000th locally assembled vehicle. To further support local demand, the company also announced plans for a larger assembly plant nearby.
Steady Growth and Expansion
Since opening its assembly facility, Mahindra has seen remarkable success, with sales growing at a compound annual rate of 27%. The brand now boasts 95 dedicated dealerships across South Africa and is on track to welcome its 100,000th customer soon.
This sustained growth is a testament to Mahindra’s commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, and making its vehicles accessible to South African consumers.
Mahindra’s Transition to SUVs
Mahindra’s journey in South Africa reflects its evolution. Initially known for its bakkies like the Bolero and Pik Up, the brand has now emerged as a leader in the SUV segment. With models like the XUV700, Scorpio-N, and the newly launched XUV 3XO, Mahindra has demonstrated its ability to innovate and adapt to consumer demands. The XUV 3XO, in particular, represents a blend of toughness and sophistication, featuring cutting-edge design and advanced technology.
The XUV 3XO: A Game-Changer in the SUV Market
At the heart of Mahindra’s anniversary celebration is the launch of the XUV 3XO. This all-new model is powered by a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine, delivering both performance and efficiency. The XUV 3XO also features segment-leading dual, floating high-resolution screens—10.25” digital cluster and 10.25” infotainment system—providing a premium driving experience.
Safety is a top priority, with industry-first six airbags as standard across all variants. Additionally, the XUV 3XO offers the segment-first Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), with ten standard safety features.
With prices starting from R254,999, the XUV 3XO has already attracted significant attention. The first consignment for South Africa is fully booked, and deliveries have begun.
The XUV 3XO also offers advanced features like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 65W laptop charging, and a Harman Kardon Premium Audio system in the top variants.

Mr. Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, commented: “The launch of the XUV 3XO is a milestone in Mahindra South Africa’s 20-year journey. With advanced technology, standout design, and world-class safety, the XUV 3XO is the epitome of the modern Mahindra brand.
