Mahindra and Lions Cricket to Join Hands in Supporting Charitable Causes Across SA

DP World Wanderers, Johannesburg, 18 November 2024: Mahindra South Africa has officially joined Lions Cricket as the Official Vehicle Sponsor.

The two-year partnership was announced at DP World Wanderers Stadium, the home of Lions Cricket in Johannesburg. At the time, the Proteas were preparing for their final T20 International match against India.

“As Mahindra enters its third decade in South Africa, we are excited to partner with Lions Cricket. This collaboration is a significant milestone for us,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “It symbolises Mahindra’s growth as a trusted and well-known brand across the country.”

Mahindra recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary in South Africa. Additionally, the company built its 20,000th Mahindra Pik Up at its KwaZulu-Natal assembly facility.

Reaching Out

Rajesh highlights that the partnership with Lions Cricket is about more than just branding. It focuses on supporting various causes across South Africa.

“We are drawn to Lions Cricket because of their commitment to supporting communities. They focus on developing the sport in schools and rural areas. Moreover, they support important causes such as breast cancer awareness, feeding schemes, and the health of young girls in schools,” says Rajesh.

“We look forward to being part of these efforts and continuing our nationwide programme of supporting South African causes.”

Mahindra – A National Sponsor of Cricket

This marks Mahindra’s second major partnership in cricket.

Earlier this year, Mahindra announced their sponsorship of the Joburg Super Kings, a popular team in the SA20 Cricket Series. Just like with Lions Cricket, Mahindra will support the team with vehicles and funding.

“It makes sense for Mahindra to offer our new generation of SUVs and Pik Up bakkies to our partners,” says Rajesh.

Mahindra recently introduced the all-new Mahindra XUV 3XO. This compact SUV has been well received and features six airbags, vehicle stability control, and a turbo-petrol engine. It is available from as little as R254,999.

This model will join the flagship XUV700 and the rugged Scorpio-N in the Lions’ team fleet. The XUV 3XO will also be on display at DP World Stadium during national and international matches. Fans can expect exciting activities and giveaways.

Mahindra will also provide its fleet of Pik Up bakkies to the Lions, helping them engage and host crowds at DP World Wanderers Stadium.

A Partnership with a Purpose

Jono Leaf-Wright, CEO of Lions Cricket, says: “We are truly grateful for this meaningful partnership. We have big dreams and plans, and this two-year agreement is a great opportunity. It’s been a long time in the making, and now is the perfect moment to announce it.”

The Lions are the reigning T20 Challenge Series champions and the 4-day Domestic Series Champions. Their Lions Academy team is also the 1-day Series Champion. In addition, they won the 2023 Sports Organisation of the Year Award.

Mahindra kicked off the partnership at the last international T20 test at DP World Wanderers. It will continue to be active in all upcoming games, including the next match between the DP World Lions and Western Province in the Cricket South Africa domestic league.
